What is OYAP?

The  is a school-to-work transition program that allows students to experience work in the skilled trades while earning cooperative education credits.

Who can participate:

  • OYAP is available to all students in grade 11 or 12 working towards their OSSD.
  • Students must be at least 15 years old and have completed 14 credits towards their OSSD.
  • Students must be enrolled in cooperative education in one of the over 140 skilled trades in Ontario.

How to apply:

  • Students must be enrolled in a cooperative education course. The coop placement must be in one of the over 140 skilled trades in Ontario,
  • The coop teacher in collaboration with students and guardians will complete the necessary OYAP requirements.

Enhanced OYAP Programs:

The Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Essex County District School Board has several programs to offer that prepare students for a career in the skilled trades. Our Enhanced OYAP programs are designed to prepare a student for a cooperative education placement in one of the following skilled trade sectors: Auto Service, Precision Metal Cutting, Hairstyling, Cooking, Construction-Carpentry. 

 

 Auto Service

Schools Offering Enhanced OYAP Programs

 Benefits

  • Students enrolled in this program will acquire various skills that will prepare them for a career in the auto service industry.
  • Students will receive industry recognized training: Working at Heights, Confined Spaces,  Forklift training and much more.

 Students can:

  • Become a registered apprentice as an auto service technician – 310S
  • Accumulate hours & skills towards their apprenticeship requirements.
  • Earn credit towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

Learn skills and gain experience for in-demand careers in the auto service industry:

  • Auto Service Technician
  • Heavy Duty Truck and Coach Technician
  • Autobody Repair

 

Enhanced OYAP Auto Service Program Layout & Timetable

Students enrolled in the Enhanced Auto Service OYAP program will have a timetable that looks similar to the example below:

  • The double-credit transportation technology classes will prepare students for their cooperative education placement in the automotive sector.
  • Students will also complete their Math and English credits in both grade 11 & 12 to ensure they stay are on track to complete their OSSD and get them ready to continue their apprenticeship after secondary school.
  • Students will engage in two full semesters of full-day coop as illustrated in the timetable below. 

 Precision Metal Cutting 

 

Schools Offering Enhanced OYAP Programs

 

Benefits:

  • Students may earn $30,000 + in their one-year coop placement
  • Students may complete Level 1 of the theory portion of their apprenticeship while still in secondary school.
  • Students will receive industry recognized training: Working at Heights, Mobile Elevated Work Platform, Forklift and much more.

 

Students can:

  • Become a registered apprentice as a general machinist – 429A
  • Accumulate hours & skills towards their apprenticeship requirements.
  • Earn credit towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

 

Learn skills and gain experience for in-demand careers in the precision metal cutting industry:

  • Tool & Die Maker
  • Mold Maker
  • CNC Machinist
  • Millwright

Enhanced OYAP Precision Metal Cutting Program Layout & Timetable

Students enrolled in the Enhanced Precision Metal Cutting OYAP program will have a timetable that looks similar to the example below:

  • The double-credit Manufacturing technology classes will prepare students for their cooperative education placement in the manufacturing sector.
  • Students will also complete their Math and English credits in both grade 11 and 12 to ensure they are on track to complete their OSSD and get them ready to continue their apprenticeship after secondary school.
  • Students will engage in two full semesters of full-day coop as illustrated in the timetable below. 

 Hairstyling

  • Students will acquire various skills that will prepare them for a career in the hairstyling profession.

Students may:

  • Become a registered apprentice 
  • Accumulate hours & skills towards their apprenticeship requirements.

Students may:

  • Become a registered apprentice as a Cook – 415A
  • Accumulate hours & skills towards their apprenticeship requirements.
  • Earn credit towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

Learn skills and gain experience for in-demand careers in the culinary profession:

  • Cook
  • Assistant Cook
  • Baker

Students enrolled in the Enhanced Cook OYAP program will have a timetable that looks similar to the example below:

  • The double-credit cooking classes will prepare students for their cooperative education placement in the culinary sector.
  • Students will also complete their Math and English credits in both grade 11 and 12 to ensure there are on track to complete their OSSD and get them ready to continue their apprenticeship after secondary school.
  • Students will engage in two full semesters of full-day coop as illustrated in the timetable below. 

 Enhanced Construction Program - Carpentry
 

Schools Offering Enhanced OYAP Programs

  • This program is offered at the located at 2179 Fasan Dr. Oldcastle, ON.
  • Students from all schools can apply to attend this program

Benefits

  • Students are eligible for the Level 1 theory part of the 403 - General Carpentry apprenticeship if they meet the following requirements:
  • Students must successfully complete both grade 11 & 12 ECP course components and  complete a full day cooperative education experience in the carpentry industry and obtain a registered training agreement with the local 494.
  • Students can earn an additional credit each year through the dual credit program associated with St. Clair College.
  • Students will receive industry recognized training: Working at Heights, Mobile Elevated Work Platform, Scaffold Training and much more.

Students can:

  • Become a registered apprentice as a general carpenter – 403 A
  • Accumulate hours & skills towards their apprenticeship requirements.
  • Earn credit towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)

Learn skills and gain experience for in-demand careers in the construction industry:

  • Carpenter
  • Interior Systems Mechanic – Steel studs and acoustical ceilings

Enhanced Construction Program – Carpentry Layout & Timetable

Students enrolled in the Enhanced Construction Program – Carpentry will have a timetable that looks similar to the example below:

  • The double-credit construction technology class will prepare students for their cooperative education placement in the construction sector.
  • Students will also complete their Math and English credits in both grade 11 and 12 to ensure they are on track to complete their OSSD and get them ready to continue their apprenticeship after secondary school.
  • The Enhanced Construction Program has a GECDSB Math & English teacher onsite at the Carpenter Union Hall.
  • Students will engage in two full semesters of full-day coop as illustrated in the timetable below. 

 

OYAP Graduates

Students graduating from high school with a registered training agreement that plan to continue with their current employer/sponsor must create an account with Skilled Trades Ontario. Please use the following link for instructions on how to register for an account with Skilled Trades Ontario.
